Digital Times: Expanding Treatment with Technology to Increase Accessibility

Our world is widely connected via technology. There is so much possible potential to create a more inclusive and accessible healthcare system for everyone. Exploring how telehealth services can provide convenience, and it can greatly impact access to a variety of mental health treatments. In this presentation, we will explore ways to better serve those struggling with an eating disorder and to create a more inclusive and accessible treatment.

  1. Attendees will gain an understanding of how technology is transforming healthcare delivery and increasing accessibility for diverse populations.

Angela Goens, MS, RDN, LD

As a Registered Dietitian, Angela is invested in removing barriers for people of color to seek the quality and equitable treatment they deserve. Angela has dedicated her career to serving those in various levels of intensive care treatment for eating disorders, depression, anxiety and trauma. Angela is the owner of Rooted Nutrition Services, which is geared towards supporting those with marginalized identities, specifically BIPOC individuals who struggle with eating disorders. Angela is the Director of Nutrition Services at Lyn-Lake Centers for Wellbeing, where she also sees individual outpatient clients. In her private practice, Angela provides peer supervision, consultation services and facilitates outpatient support groups. Angela is also a contributor to Let’s Eat Curriculum. In 2022, Angela co-created the first ever BIPOC Eating Disorders Conference. This multi-day virtual event was developed to better meet the needs of those often overlooked in mental health treatment models. This conference gives a platform for clinicians and students in the field of eating disorders to learn from an expert lineup of BIPOC providers who present on an important variety of topics.

In this presentation, we will explore key strategies for effectively engaging clients in a telehealth environment, ensuring both a positive experience and improved outcomes. As telehealth continues to grow as a primary mode of service delivery, providers must adapt their communication, technology, and clinical practices to maintain high standards of care and client satisfaction. This session will focus on best practices for building rapport, fostering trust, and promoting active participation during virtual appointments. By the end of the session, participants will have a deeper understanding of how to create a client- centered telehealth experience that maximizes engagement, trust, and therapeutic success. Attendees will walk away with practical tools, tips, and techniques that can be immediately applied in their telehealth practice. Ideal for healthcare professionals, therapists, counselors, and anyone engaged in telehealth service delivery, this session will provide valuable insights for building stronger, more effective client relationships in the digital age.

  1. Participants will be able to name the 5 virtual best practices, and be able to identify how to adapt their clinical and operational processes to align with these best practices.
     

  2. Participants will be able to recognize common challenges in the client telehealth experience, and identify 1-3 ways of problem solving these challenges.
     

  3. Participants will be able to recognize 3-5 ethical issues related to telehealth practice.

Brandi Stalzer is a Board Certified Telemental Health professional and a licensed therapist, and specializes in the treatment of binge eating symptoms and the underlying causes including mood, anxiety and obsessional disorders. Most recently, Brandi served as the Clinical Director for the largest eating disorder virtual program in the country where her passion for virtual care grew. She saw its effectiveness, especially those with binge eating disorder, and wanted to create a space specifically for those individuals. Additionally, she has led many other eating disorder programs across the nation. Brandi has specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders (CBT-E) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Binge Eating. She also uses approaches from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Exposure and Response Prevention.
