Eating Disorders and Trauma

About

RECEIVE 1 CREDIT HOUR OF CE/CME! *Approved for physicians, nurses, dietitians and social workers. Other healthcare professionals may consult their licensure board to verify that their participation counts toward CE requirements.* Many patients with eating disorders also suffer from concurrent trauma-related disorders (Convertino, Morland, & Blashill, 2022). Trauma has an impact on general mental health and has been associated with the development of an eating disorder. Trauma and PTSD have to be addressed in treatment of patients with eating disorders in order to truly help patients on their way to recovery. In this presentation, healthcare providers will learn about the co-occurrence of trauma with eating disorders, how to assess for posttraumatic stress disorder in the context of working with a patient with an eating disorder, and how to adapt treatment to address both eating disorder and trauma symptoms, either concurrently or consecutively. A trauma-informed care perspective will be utilized in this presentation and attendees will be provided with grounding and self-care strategies to use with patients and as healthcare providers working with this population. Objectives: - Understand the impact of trauma and PTSD on the development and treatment of eating disorders - Increase knowledge of assessment and treatment of trauma-related symptoms in eating disorder treatment - Reflect on a trauma-informed care perspective to address self-care and grounding needs in eating disorder treatment
