Advanced Medical Considerations for the Care and Treatment of Eating Disorders

Other healthcare professionals may consult their licensure board to verify that their participation counts toward CE requirements.* This course will provide an overview of medical complications of eating disorders and their treatment. What is the evidence for pharmacologic management of eating disorders? What medical conditions can arise in treating disorders involving binging, restricting, or purging, and how do we detect them? What do we do about them? What should prompt evaluation at a higher level of care? Objectives: 1. Review medical assessment for eating disorders, including prognostic and demographic factors and triage 2. Understand the evidence for pharmacologic treatment of eating disorders, including what medications can and cannot do 3. Develop comfort with understanding the multi-systemic medical complications of eating disorders and how to address those complication 4. Apply an understanding of the pathophysiology of refeeding syndrome and purging behavior to treatment
